Easy to build with a second pair of hands, will be a bit trickier with only 1 person though!
I started with a BBQ, the main chamber performed just fine, the cast iron grills leave nice grill marks and air flow control needed minimal tweaking. So, well happy with the BBQ functionality and that's probably where it will be most used.
However I had an itch to scratch with smoking, so the following day I tried the smoker function out. The end result was successful and that's what counts.
As a first time smoker and after quite a few youtube videos, here's what I found. Contrary to the usual advice its not possible to control airflow from the fire box on this smoker (its more a high or low kind of adjustment), just leave it fully open. Once temperature is stable close the chimney vent to circa 30-40%. For me, this brought the main chamber up to a good cooking temperature. as it ran cold with both vents fully open.
Use good quality charcoal lump wood that contains good large chunks and your wood of choice for smoking. Don't make the same mistake as me and use pizza oven Oak(kindling size), it burns too quickly and you end up topping it up every half hour. Take the time to source some chunky hardwood logs for smoking. I found the lump wood keeps it burning and the logs lift the temperature a bit.
As a rough guide I found the temperature gauge reads 20-30 degrees C hotter than the temperature at the grill.
I preheated the logs on top of the fire chamber, this worked well as they lit as soon as I put them in the fire box, so I didn't have to keep it open long. However the log off gassing or its insulating effect caused the paint to come off.
The more expensive smokers usually have a grease catching method, this doesn't and I made a bit of a mess, I would suggest lining the main chamber with foil to prevent it dripping out.
As mentioned in a previous review a bit of fire gasket wouldn't go a miss in some places.
If it wasn't for the grease incident I would have given it 5 stars, I accept you can't have everything for this budget though!
It is currently excellent value for money and does what it says on the tin. With a bit of effort and money for fire tape, I reckon you can get this to perform very close to the much more expensive models.
I recently bought this because I wanted to start smoking. First time I used it I couldn't get the air flow right. The intake that's on the grill is quite tight so my fire kept dying. As soon as I figured out to use a small piece of wood to hold to door to the fire box open a small bit, everything worked perfectly. Great value for money and I would 100% recommend this to anyone who wants to give it a go themselves. The temp near the fire box is hotter than the rest of the box but that's obvious really. The cover fits like a glove and is made from good material so defo buy that too. For sure be ordering from here again. Only took an hour or so to put together as well. Hope this helps
Very quick delivery on the day of my choosing.
Fairly easy to assemble I managed on my own but did take a while.
The smoker Main chamber can't faut it huge rack space removable upper rack system.
Fire box is removable from the main chamber and only one door. Comes with racks so you can cook on main fire if you do wish.
Easy to maneuver with the wheels attachment.
The smoker it's self built decent for the price however there are a few areas to point. The way opening mechanism of the main chamber works leaves a rather large gap at the back where heat and smoke can easily escape.
As mentioned above with the fire box being removable it allows a lot of heat smoke loss. There is no side door to allow full air flow when starting your fire. Also making it difficult to get ash ect out as main hatch is only accessible point. The vent on the side is rather lack luster and makes the fire control rather tricky.
Overall all for a budget smoker can't complain for the cost. Great starter smoker and with a few modifications you can sort some of the above issues yourself.
Quick delivery on a day of my choosing.
